As we were over-running announcements with this and a few of us seem to be interested I will start this thread. Jack the Ripper and other serial killers, luverly. From a site which perhaps Morsereg already knows, as he's interested in such: hosted.ray.easynet.co.uk/serial_killers/whitecha.html

Good idea for the new thread. I liked your post on Jack, that was quite well done. I haven't seen that site, but if I looked in the right place it only has five or so killers on there. Will have to keep that one a bookmark, for later. I personally use a mix of the Crime Library and Wikipedia, but once I get my base info down on a good amount of subjects I'm going to go indepth and search the web for as much as I can. Elizabeth Bathory fascinates me in every possible way, almost as much as Vlad III Tepes Dracula, even if he wasn't technically a serial killer, he DID murder. Have a biography on him somewhere in this house...

In his native land Vlad Tepes is seen as a national hero. He was undoubtedly sadistic, but it was a violent place and age. Today he might be tried for war crimes, but most of the horror stories came from those who were his enemies, I understood. His people thought him a strong leader, brutal but what they needed. In England they used to flay the skins from marauding Vikings and nails them on to church doorways. I did read one book, just one, on Elizabeth Bathory, now she's much more complicated. You have to try and look past the propaganda and sensationalism to get at the facts with most things. Also Gilles de Rai, - I think - he was a contemporary of Joan of Arc, a lord, a knight, respected, yet accused of the kidnap , rape and torture of perhaps hundreds of children . Possibly true, possibly a set up by powerful people who decided he was too rich and powerful. Rather like the Templars, accused of sodomy, sorcery, blasphemy, devil-worship, by a King who was in so much debt to them he was looking for a quick fix out of it, and all their lands and money. Never believed it, myself, I have quite a high regard for them, for what they were, in their times.
I read a book called '' Happy Like Murderers '' , about Fred and Rosemary West. It was pretty harrowing. I know a couple of people in the building trade who employed Fred West, Gloucester is not even 50 miles from where we live, - they were speculating once about if he had used these building sites to dispose of any bodies. There's something particularly sordid and gruesome about those crimes, a so-say normal house, normal town, and all that happening, over years. Pity the bastard killed himself ( if he did ) the police reckon he could have helped them solve a lot more missing persons files than the bodies they did find.He even hinted that.
