The Thain's Book - The Instructions of Middle-Earth
I. Introduction: A Freeform Roleplay Center
Greetings to all! Many other post-by post message boards almost seem as though to present scripted roles for their members to fill, as though characters can only do 'this and such.' Or, you have the extremely hardcore boards where admins and mods sit 24/7 mediating stuff like The elf attacks the orc with an astral longsword +3, which deals 34 amount of damage. However, the elf is wearing an amulet of Increase Damage, etc., etc...the orc's armor is a heavy plate, which carries 9 defense...... Not so at The Citadel of Guard: here you may choose any profession or way of life for your character, and you may lead that life however you will. There are several different opportunities which you may pursue: you may become a Realm Ruler, and live a life of leadership - waging war or furthering peace; you may take up a position within one of the Realms, and live your innkeeper dream, your steward fantasy, or be a military general. Or, belong to no Realm in particular, wandering afar afield and writing superb character roleplay with your fellow members. All manner of characters may be made, characters which follow the writings of Professor Tolkien: Elves, Men, Dwarves, Orcs, etc. Post your race and description in the Hall of Record, and you may begin play! I will review your membership, but please feel free to begin RP'ing as soon as you join. Again, this board is intended to give relative freedom in RP. The rules are not strict, and you are free to carry the stories along yourself, though I warn than any invincibility or tampering with other members' characters...things of that nature are not acceptable. A little dialog is all right for them, but don't like kill them or send them to Forochel or something. Anyway, just have fun. Don't overdo the profanity. A little in moderation is acceptable, though none directed toward other members of the board. It's a relatively free environment, with plenty of ideas and walks of life for our members. The choice is yours, and it begins with the selection of a character.
II. Character Creation
You are pretty much free to do whatever you want: races from the works of Tolkien. Just don't go hog wild. I mean, I'd better not see any Balrogs or Winged Dragons or stuff like that. If there's some colossal RP going down where something like those would work, then I'll think about it. Send me a PM through the forum, and I'll get back with you. Other than that, roam free; Elves, Men, Dwarves, Orcs, Easterlings, Ents, Halflings...make whatever. You can apply for Realm Rulership. Or, feel free to settle down and build a house or even an inn or a shop. Also, venture forth and make or pursue quests abroad. The choice is yours. When you do make your decision, then the time will have come to post it in the Hall of Record. Post a profile of your character in the Description thread. I shall post a sample there for you to follow, consisting of at least the items included. Be creative! Describe your character's chain mail to the detail, and the shade of her cloak as well. Give a specific history, and do not hesitate to give length to your sample post.
III. Realms, Realm Rulers, Wars, Normal Characters, and Custom Titles
The Realms of Middle-Earth are diverse, and within them may occur all the roleplay of the board. However, the Grand Master shall consider a select few as rulers of these realms. These Realm Rulers shall be players who would like to RP as the King or Queen of their realm. An application in the appropriate thread is required to become a Realm Ruler. The Grand Master shall examine said application, and either approve or deny the request if there are realms available. In the past, The Citadel of Guard was based upon Realm Ruler RP with armies and such, but now that we are beginning anew, there will be no armies and realm wars, things like that. For specific RP's, a ruler or some character may bring with them into the RP a force for war of some sort (a not overlarge amount), but there shall be no standing armies for each realm. Also, your character may be a wanderer, with no particular place of residence. It is as you will. Your character's life may be lived however you wish it to be. This method of roleplay shall work well, and enhances the aspect of life within the Lord of the Rings. If you have a certain position within a realm, or if you have a certain title by which your character should be addressed, then please PM me your requested title. Upon review of said title, I shall either disapprove, or approve and create it (more often than not it shall be the latter). Realm Rulers shall have the title Realm Ruler, but anyone else may present their ideas, i.e. Innkeeper of the Green Dragon Pub, or Steward of Lothlorien, or Marshal of the Riddermark, etc. Assuming it's not too outrageous, then it should get approved (Nothing like The Magnificent and Most Highly Honoured Subtle Master of Wizardry. Heh.). Go for it other than that.
IV. Setting the Stage
The Citadel of Guard version 6.0 has its setting after the War of the Ring and the End of the Third Age, and after the death of Aragorn; basically, set in the early Fourth Age. Sauron's spirit has passed, the Istari have departed, and so forth. The events common to roleplay: i.e. battles, wars, etc. can still occur within a LotR environment, but just without characters not available for use. Frodo cannot be in an RP, since he is in Valinor; the Witch-King is dead, etc. On that note, roam free with your RP in a character-canon Fourth Age. Also, RP'ing in different locations at once is acceptable. The thing to do, therefore, is to not be specific on travel times, etc., if the RP is a simple character RP. However, do not be in two places at once while participating in a major RP event: battle, etc. The thing to do in that case would be to be sure and be specific that the times are different if you are posting your character in two places in real time while involved in a major RP. On both of these topics, this board is very freeform, but there will of course be some organization required if believability is to be attained.
V. Purpose of the Forum
This message board is intended as (1): a place where people and members of our family may feel welcome to meet and mingle, and exchange thoughts, as well as (2): a wholesome, enjoyable written simulation of life within Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, with places for plenty of fun for its members. That said, this board will no longer be based upon Realm Rulers running about a'warring; there shall also be a place for simple, traditional character roleplay, in which the Realm Rulers shall also partake. Thought must be taken by them, for if a realm goes to war, what is to occur to all of its residents if the realm is lost, and becomes a completely different place. This board is an attempt at an amalgam of different ways of life, biased neither toward the one or the other. Let all things be done in harmony and consideration, and this attempt might very well become a reality.
