The dwarves were an old an ancient race, trained in the art of war, not known for their agility, but their brute strength. Even cavalry charges had been known to be halted by the firm stance of the dwarven armies of old. But now, their numbers dwindled, and even in the Lonely-Mountain, things were less than they had once been.
Of the dwarves of Erebor, herein' lies the account of their strength in arms.
Of Dwarven Armies:
Of dwarven armies, the great part were composed of axemen, darves who bore the ancient weapon of their people. Most dwarves carried several, used in different means. Some could be hurled from a distance, while others were used, simply to send a crashing blow to the enemy.
Of the dwarves of Erebor, almost 36,000 were of such a kind. Axemen, who bore several of these weapons, and wore steel helms, heavy armor, comprised of mail, typically wrought from steel or iron. Some also carried a small shield, which could be slung across their back in times when it was not needed.
The dwarves also had many archers, though not gifted in the same manner as the elves, they could send their volleys crashing down upon the enemy. Though their bows were short-ranged, when they hit their marks, the outcome was grim.
The army of Erebor contained near 12,000 of such dwarves. Each dwarf was equipped in the same fashion of the axemen, in reference to armor. But they also had a broad sword that they wore at their side, and a larger shield across their back.
Such are the armies of the dwarves of Erebor.
As of late, the armies of Erebor are staioned:
13,000 are in Erebor.
35,000 are at war in Arnor/Angmar
