The upland woods, consisting at least partly of beech trees, that lay to the west of Rivendell between the Rivers Hoarwell and Loudwater. They were the haunt of trolls, three of which famously waylayed Bilbo and his companions during the Quest of Erebor.

Ten Thousand Arnorien Warriors from Fornost marched through the dark trees of the troll shaws. The Majority of them were archers but a small margine of them were footsoldiers and Rangers.
The hardy warriors' armor shined in the moonlight that streamed through the trees, and they had the twinkle of westerness in their eyes. The trolls were soon awake and patrolling the forest. Five hundred had mustered at the sight of the warriors that had come. They raised their arms and charged forward. Many arrows were each aimed and sent into their gut, stunning them and sending them toppling to the ground. There was a small amount of poison but only enough to subdue them. Thousands of arrows found their mark on the trolls and soon hundreds of beasts were led to a series of cages. They were pushed into the cages and the iron doors were shut and locked. The caravan of soldiers then found their way back to Fornost where the training of the trolls would begin in Fornost's infamous barracks.
