From north of Umbar to Khand, in the years since Raithen had taken the Throne, he had begun construction of a great Wall, dotted by keeps and larger Donjons, - here, in time, would be based the Army of the North. The Wall served a dual purpose, - since the disaster of the Pelennor, when few of the Haradhrim forces had returned, the people who dwelled in those northern regions feared the Men of the North, the steel-eyed men of Gondor and the fierce blond Rohirrim, and , as Raithen knew, the Wall to them, was a barrier, - it would also give an attacking force pause for thought. Of course a fleet could land at any decent harbour around the western or eastern coasts , and no wall however large was impregnable.
But there were massive, guarded , towered gateways, which were opened to let through trade and travelers, Raithen did not even require that such be disarmed, for although the great roads were patrolled, Harad was a violent, tribal country and any-one going weaponless into the interior would be food for the vultures.
