Thousands of square miles, and crossed only by the straight roads, with stopping points at way-stations, or oasis towns, the Erg takes its names from the huge, rolling dunes, - but there are areas of flat, scorched, crumbled rock, salt pans, ' drum sand ', which makes a resounding ' boom, ' when stepped on.
No desert is lifeless, but in some places life is represented here soley by huge scorpions. The ancient nomadic tribespeople of Northern Harad, are the only mortals who can traverse the Great Erg without following the trade roads.
