A fire-mountain in the Northern parts of Mordor where Sauron forged the One Ring in the Second Age and in wich the Ring fell thousands of years later to bring about Sauron's downfall.
When Sauron chose the place of Mordor as his dwelling place in the Second Ag, Orodruin was the reason for his choice as it was for Tragnis. Sauron used the fire that welled from the heart of the earth in his sorceries and in his forging. The most famous result of his forging was made in the year II 1600. So powerful was the Sorcery used in the making of the Ring that it could only be unmade by casting it into the very fires that created it.
Orodruin was far more than a natural volcano- Sauron seems to have been able to extend his own power into it and was able to control it's fires. It had lain dormant during Sauron's vacancy from Mordor and sprang into life upon his return.
The Sammath Naur are the Chambers of Fire that lay within Mount Doom. The door to the Sammath Naur were cut into the side of Mount Doom like a window that looked directly out to Barad-Dur like an eye of fire. Within it's door was a tunnel that ran to the center of the fiery mountain, and there a great bridge was built that ran out to the midst of the fires of Mount Doom. It is here that Sauron forged the One Ring.

Mount Doom was set into a frenzy as the lone cloaked figure that was Alcorad ascended its slopes, moving slowly up a path to the Sammath Naur that was beaten into the rock by orcs, many who died. Slowly his figure made his way the mountain until its insidious form was silhouetted against the red and orange light eminating from the doorway of the Sammath Naur. Against the colorful light streaming out into the darkness of Mordor, Alcorad seemed to be naught but a shadow. Perhaps a tear in Ea where Illuvitar made not but void darkness.
As Alcorad stepped into the doorway and made his way under the arched stonework that lined the ceiling of the Sammath Naur, the tetra of the volcanoe lept from the core and spiralled around Alcorad and propelled back forward into the pit. The heat became intense as the Dark Lord stepped out into the open and Orodruin seemed to ignite as a reaction to his presence. Silently Alcorad moved forward to the cliff and felt a fiery blast shoot upward into the air as the entire inner cavity of Mount Doom became filled with molten rock. As it succumbed an unharmed Alcorad remained standing, his facial expression bland but his eyes wide with anticipation.
He bent down and placed three transparent opals down at the head of the large precipice and slowly stood back up. Immediatly three tongues of fire ascended from the pit and engulfed the opals. It was now that Alcorad's true sorceries would take place. To the first of the opals, he took it up into the air said. "To this, my treasure of darkness, I bestow eternal life to all who are subject to its light e'en those who no longer live." Alcorad looked slowly down to the second and lifted it. "And unto this, my second treasure of darkness I bestow the abilities to sway the mind of any mortal so bold as to openly confront me for any who look upon this stone shall feel their own minds slip into chaos as my own takes hold." Alcorad set both of these opals down and filled them with a shadow, unrivalled in their darkness. As he lifted the third one all of Mount Doom began to shake and a great pillar of fire engulfed the precipice, one similar to the day of Alcorad's arrival. "And to the third!" Alcorad shouted as the fires of Mount Doom engulfed him. "I bestow the power of the elements! Those abilities which were given to Melkor during the first moments of the world when the Valar sang before Illuvitar the omnipotent!" The three opals lifted into the air and were fused with the fires, the light of Mount Doom and shadows of Alcorad's sorceries brought together to bring about three treasures of incredible power. The fires cleared and Alcorad's eyes were left to a dull hue, his face gaunt and thin. He took into his hands the three opals of his creation and dubbed them the Oldoliri. "These are but the first of my creations in Orodruin and their own sinister effects shall bring about even more. In time all of Middle Earth shall kneel down before the me and cower."
Alcorad drew his cloak tight around his body and swept up the Oldoliri, concealing them within his garments. He departed from Orodruin with his crimson eyes rested firmly upon them in utter greed of what was and what shall be.
